Smart Kitchen Upgrades from 5 Renters — Apartment Therapy

You may think that being a renter means you're stuck with your ugly, hateful rental kitchen. But think again. While you may not be able to tear out cabinets or replace appliances, there are plenty of meaningful changes you can make as a renter that will have a huge impact on the look and feel of your kitchen. For inspiration, look no further than these five rooms, where renters working within very small budgets transformed less-than-ideal kitchens into envy-inducing spaces.

Above: Simple solutions like an allover coat of paint, a framed backsplash mirror, and new hardware turned this drab rental kitchen from One Kings Lane into a stylish space where anyone would love to cook.

In his Boston home, Philip removed cabinet doors, which gives the look of open shelving without the expense of remodeling, and half-painted his cabinets for an extra dose of style.

Kevin of Thou Swell painted the lower cabinets and the countertop, replaced cabinet hardware, and added an adhesive backsplash to give this rental kitchen a totally new look.

In her French Quarter apartment, Kerry not only removed doors but also painted the inside of the cabinets. She also added a tin tile backsplash for a bit of Bohemian flair. You can see the full transformation here.

Emily, an architect, made a lot of upgrades to the kitchen in her Houston home, including painting the cabinets, painting the countertops, and removing cabinet doors. All these things added together to the transformation of a kitchen she says was "a little bit of a disaster" into the charming space you see today.
