Just in time for 4th of July weekend, you now have an option for red, white, and blue wine. The Spanish startup Gïk has created an electric-blue sweet wine that aims to disrupt your preconceived notions of the possibilities of wine and the very nature of taste. Do you dare to take a sip?
While the mouthwash-colored wine may appear unnatural, the company insists that it is colored naturally with anthocyanin pigments and organic indigo. So why change the color at all? Slate interviewed Charles Spence, a professor at Oxford who specializes in experimental psychology, to understand why. Spence notes that “The Italian Futurists were first to colour wine blue back in 1930s in Turin,” and that “They used colour to discombobulate their dinner guests.” Blue wine certainly would be a shocking addition to your next dinner party.
The blue wine is also meant as a poke to traditional wine culture. Gïk is directly marketing to millenials by trying to create something new, accessible, and relatively cheap. The wine creators wrote in a press release that “Drinking Gïk is not just about drinking blue wine; you are drinking innovation.”
You can currently pre-order the wine in the United States for $16 a bottle.
