No matter how hard you work, there will always be distractions outside the gym that can detour you from your goals. As I’ve said before, it’s not enough to train and practice hard if you aren’t willing to remain dedicated the rest of the day. Contrary to what some believe, the decisions that you make outside the gym often have the greatest impact on your success (or failure) as an athlete. Talent will only take you so far if you surround yourself with the wrong people and make poor decisions. With that in mind, it’s important that you eliminate the obstacles that will inhibit your ability to maximize your potential.
Wisdom from Cary Kolat
If you follow this blog, there’s a good chance that you are familiar with former Olympic wrestler Cary Kolat. I’ve posted a few of his videos over the years. I share many of his beliefs regarding the mental aspects of athletic preparation. The video below serves as a prime example. You don’t need to be a wrestler to benefit from his wisdom. His advice is pertinent to athletes from any sport.
Regardless of your goals, success at the highest level requires an insane amount of dedication and work. Few will argue against this simple premise. Yet, while most recognize the significance of these attributes, it’s rare that you find someone who truly gives 100 percent. Most people become too distracted to stay on track towards their goals. Despite good intentions, they eventually succumb to the various obstacles and interruptions that exist in everyday life.
Therefore, it’s imperative that you actively strive to eliminate any potential distractions. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that obstacles will disappear on their own. Instead, it’s important that you understand your role in the process. If you aren’t focused and committed, it’s only a matter of time before you are distracted and sidetracked.
Final Thoughts
In this day and age, there is more exercise research and technology than ever before. There are no more secrets as far as what is necessary to effectively accomplish your goals. Whether you wish to become bigger, faster, stronger, or more enduring, there’s a recipe for success that has been proven beyond any doubt.
Thus, the reason many people fail has nothing to do with a lack of knowledge or information. The true cause of failure is often linked to a lack of focus and dedication. Knowing what to do is entirely different from committing yourself to the task each day.
As an old saying suggests, all know the way, but few actually walk it.
