Mung Yoga Bowl

I thought I'd show you how I took a favorite component of a recent recipe, made a minor tweak, and turned it into something completely different. Do you remember the herb-packed coconut milk from this green curry porridge? Well, it's good. Good in its own right. And if you have some on hand, it's a nice jumping off point for a meal. The luxe, cilantro-ginger creaminess makes it brilliant as a dressing, drizzle, or sandwich spread...add some eggs and you have an easy tart filling. For today's recipe I thought I'd try a version with yogurt in place of the coconut milk, and it did not disappoint. Lobbing dollops of it over a simple bowl of mung beans and quinoa made for the sort of clean, nutritious lunch I aim for (but don't always achieve ;). Some toasted nuts and a drizzle of paprika oil bring the flair and a bit of textural contrast.

This is also the sort of thing that you could pack in layers in a wide-mouthed mason jar as a portable lunch or picnic. It's good at room temperature and doesn't require much fuss at all once you have the components prepared. And really, don't get too hung up on the base ingredient(s) - like I mentioned, I used mung beans and black quinoa, but if you have lentils and/or brown rice on hand, you're set. Try to work in a substantial protein component though - it'll keep you strong and less hungry compared to, say, a rice-only version. xo -h

Spaghetti with Clams

Busy moms, I applaud you! Actually I bow down to you. I have no idea how you do it. I’m neither a mom, nor blessed with any innate organizational skills. My own mother had six kids in eight years, and we had sit-down family dinners every night (couldn’t afford to go out!) When I ask her how she managed, she just shrugs and tells me she had a lot of energy back then.

This spaghetti with clams recipe is for busy moms and busy not-moms. It’s for those of us who sometimes (often) forget to plan, wait until we’re hungry to think about dinner, but have the foresight to keep a well-stocked pantry. It’s easy and takes about 30 minutes or so to make, depending on how quickly you can bring a pot of water to a boil on your stove.

Meatless Monday NO COOKING REQUIRED

Hello! How’s it going? Yesterday I was all buzzed from the half marathon and iced coffee that I wanted to get out and do something! I set out to explore Orange County a bit since I don’t do that enough!! Grabbed some fro-yo, because that’s my thing. And then I did something kinda random, but […]

Bulk Up Without Getting a Belly

Is Your Relationship Evolving with You?

One of our most valuable human characteristics is the capacity to consciously evolve. Once we reach a certain point of self-awareness, it’s a small step to advancing our social, emotional, and spiritual intelligence. What happens, however, when our context—especially a significant interpersonal relationship—fails to keep pace with our self-creation?

Decide on Love

Taking refuge in presence—choosing presence—requires training. When “point A” is unpleasant, the last thing we want to do is to stay and feel our experience. Rather than entrusting ourselves to the waves of experience, we want to get away, lash out, numb ourselves, do anything but touch what’s real.

10 Edible Spring Weeds

Many of us look forward to the arrival of spring farmers' markets but there's another source of beautiful, seasonal greens — your own yard or local park! Plants like dandelions, chickweed, and lamb's quarters are often dismissed as weeds, yet in many cases they are even more nutritious than cultivated produce — and quite delicious, too!

I'm Catering a Big Wedding This Spring. What Should I Make? — Homemade Weddings

With spring comes wedding season, and I just made plans with a friend to cater her wedding later this spring. I've done similar things before (like the sit-down dinner for my brother's wedding a year ago), but this time will be a little different: we're just serving hors d'oeuvres and small sweet bites after a late evening wedding. The crowd will be fairly large: about 250 people.

So this is the moment when I turn to all of you and ask: what should I make?

Responding to “Borderline” Provocations Part V

Being in a relationship, by blood or romance, with someone with traits of borderline personality disorder is incredibly challenging. Recipe: Egg, Spinach, and Spelt Salad with Green Garlic Dressing — Healthy Lunch Recipes from The Kitchn

When I make salads, I have a fairly basic formula that I adapt based on what I have on hand: greens, extra vegetables, grains, nuts or seeds, a basic vinaigrette, and protein (either legumes or eggs). This spinach salad follows my basic formula pairing some wonderful spring produce — green garlic and spinach — with the earthy, chewiness of the spelt. Add the hard boiled egg and you have a quite the hearty salad.

When the Phone Rings During Dinner: Then and Now — Kitchn Diary: Anne in South Carolina

In the eighties, our phone rang a lot during dinner, something my mother didn't love, though she saw the necessity in my dad's line of work. He was a real estate agent, and a lot of people needed him outside of their own work hours. (After all, you usually have to have a job to buy a house, so ditching work to look for one isn't the best plan.) But we still had rules about talking on the phone during dinner, and they even applied to Dad.

With changing lifestyles and meal times, as well as seriously ramped up technology, the rules have changed, but perhaps not as much as we think. My parents' standards for phone communication at the table are the same ones we use today, even if we don't have a fancy box to hide our phones like the one in the above photo.
